Chiropractic Care - By the Numbers

by Dr. Jeff Rauch and Richard Karlewicz-RPHCA Therapist on 10/02/14

In my practice at Rego Park Healthcare Alliance, patients have access to some of the best healthcare providers in the Tri-State area, including Physical Therapy, Orthopedics, Spine Specialists, Neurology, Acupuncture, Pain Management and of course, my specialty - Chiropractic Care. Today, I'd like to review some points about Chiropractic Care that perhaps you didn't know about.

For those of you who aren't quite sure what a chiropractor treats, here is a nut shell version. Chiropractors treat a wide variety of conditions including neck and back pain, sports/auto/work related injuries and recurring strains. Chiropractors with advanced training, like myself, also treat conditions related to joint pain, like Arthritis.

Lets take a look at Chiropractic Care by the numbers....

7.4% - in 2002, approximately 7.4% of the population used Chiropractic Care - A higher percentage than yoga, massage, acupuncture, or other diet based therapies.

35% - More than 35% of patients receiving Chiropractic Care were being treated for low and mid-back pain, and

20% - ...almost 20% of patients were being treated for neck pain.  More than half of those surveyed said their symptoms were chronic.

60% - Approximately 60% of all Chiropractic patients are female.

20 Million plus - will seek Chiropractic Treatments this year.

100 Years - is how long Chiropractic Treatment has been provided.

1 Million Plus - Chiropractic Care is provided over one million times every business day in America.

75% - 84% - of woman who receive Chiropractic Care during pregnancy report relief of back pain.

Over $60,000,000,000.00 ($60 Billion) - is spent on finding relief for back pain each year in the United States.

58% - of the people using Chiropractic stated it was an absolutely essential part of their health care and insurance package.

45%-55% - savings in treatments when they are provided by a professional chiropractor versus other medical doctors.

20,000,000 plus Americans - seek out chiropractic treatment every year.

3x's - Chiropractic patients report 3 times more satisfied with their treatments than patients seeing Family Practice physicians.

9 out of 10 - patients feel their treatments were effective.

Back Pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the Second Most common reason for visits to the doctors office, outnumbered only by Upper Respiratory infections.

As you can clearly see, Chiropractic Care is Not a trend or a fad. It is a time tested and proven method of assisting patients with a variety of conditions. In our practice, in cases where it is indicated, we couple Chiropractic Care with other specialties such as Physical Therapy, Pain Management, etc.. and has proven to be even more effective.

Still skeptical? Then why not take a look at our Patient Testimonial Page and see what real patients are saying about our services. Also, we have a more detailed description about our Chiropractic Services on our website for your education.

Still unsure if Chiropractic Care is for you? Then why not give us a call at 718 606 6000 and set up a no obligation consultation - at no cost to you - and find out yourself if Chiropractic Care can benefit you.

Hope that gives you a little insight into Chiropractic Care. We are always here to assist you in any way we can.

Until next time, Cheers!

Back Pain - Working Out in The WorkPlace

by Dr. Jeff Rauch and Richard Karlewicz-RPHCA Therapist on 09/25/14

In our Practice here at Rego Park Healthcare Alliance, we see all types of patients, from athletes-young and old, auto and work accident victims, blue and white collar workers, etc... Lately, we have seen an influx of the latter - with the majority of those white-collared workers complaining of back pain and ailments. In these situations, we have identified many contributing factors however, there is one factor that stands out - sitting all day, every day, for extended periods of time.

Digging deeper, research shows us that American employees spend approximately 1/3 of their life at work, and many jobs - particularly in offices - are stationary.

However, exercise is a vital and important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. So, what do you do when you need to burn calories but are stuck at your desk or cubicle? Consider the following;
  • The American Heart Association recommends that a person takes 10,000 steps throughout their day. Working makes this difficult, however, as repeated studies show that most adults take less than 5,000 steps a day.
  • The American Heart Association also urges 30 minutes of walking to reduce heart disease risk. 100 steps per minute is considered a reasonable pace.
  • Climbing stairs for 10 minutes will burn 150 calories. (calculated using a 150 pound base body weight)
  • Athletic employees statistically do better work in the office than non-athletic employees.
Just because your in a cubicle and not on the field or court doesn't mean you can't keep your body fit. consider using your bike to work instead of driving your car, and switch our your work chair for an exercise ball.  You can also use your work furniture to stay in shape. The Physical Therapists at Rego Park Healthcare Alliance suggest that office employees try to take a break from sitting every 20 minutes You can use the break to burn some calories (see above).

For a list and description of exercises you can perform at work, using just the office furniture you have, take a peek at http://www.regoparkhealthcarealliance.com/RPHCA-Patient-Education-Center.html.  Our Patient Education Center offers some great tips on the above, and more.

Exercising at your desk is a great way to stay active but don't strain yourself while working out or overexerting yourself around the office. Most injuries from the office come from overuse and repetitive motions, much like many sports injuries. Ergonomic office furniture is a good way to avoid workplace injuries, but it is not always enough. Some workers can end up with conditions such as;
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Bursitis
  • Muscle Strain
  • Low Back and Neck Pain
  • Tendon Injury, and more...
If you or a friend, family or loved one feels you may be suffering from a work place injury, take a look at our Website under Patient Education Center for some tips on relieving symptoms, and of course, you can always call us here at 718 606 6000 or simply email us directly from our site.

I hope this brings you some insight.

Until next time, Cheers!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jeff Rauch DCM
